Coronavirus: Hungary and Germany to Lift Travel Restrictions on Each Other’s Citizens

Hungary and Germany are lifting travel restrictions on each other’s citizens from 8:00 in the morning on Sunday, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on his Facebook page on Saturday.

Germany’s management of the epidemic has proven to be successful, allowing the government to lift restrictions on passenger travel, Szijjártó said.

He added that the many Hungarians who work in Germany, which is Hungary’s biggest trade partner, had faced serious difficulties getting to work or maintaining ties with their families back home in the recent period.

German nationals will be allowed entry into Hungary, and Hungarians who return home from Germany will not have to undergo mandatory quarantine, Szijjártó said.

In a separate Facebook post late Friday, Szijjártó said all border crossings on Hungary’s frontiers with Slovakia and Austria would be open from Friday evening.

Thus, from yesterday evening on, all 34 crossings between Slovakia and Hungary and all 30 between Austria and Hungary are open.
